Meet the Authors

Leonard Leinow
Leonard Leinow has three decades of experience growing and studying medicinal cannabis, and brings a unique spiritual perspective to his work. In 2009, he formed Synergy Wellness, a not-for-profit medical cannabis collective in California. The organization has served more than five thousand members during the past eight years. Synergy offers hand-crafted, artisanal, organic, and natural whole-plant products including extracts, tinctures, flowers, topical salves, and live plants. Leonard is an expert in products that are rich in cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive, “get well” molecule in the cannabis plant. He is is a pioneer in the application of these medicines to cancer, epilepsy, pain, M.S., and many other health conditions. Leonard earned his Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a minor in art, from UCLA. He became an executive search consultant in the healthcare industry – a career that lasted more than 20 years. He dedicating his free time to his art, including bronze sculpture, ceramics, and painting. His artwork has been shown in fine art galleries worldwide. Leonard has been an explorer his whole life. He traveled through thirty-five countries during his youth, and lived in India for five years, studying the religious, spiritual and cultural aspects of ancient civilizations. His inquiries include thirty years of practice in shamanic and tantric traditions, and the martial art of Aikido. For many years, he was a hands on healer performing professional deep tissue body work, offering healing to hundreds of clients. This wide background gives him a unique ability to understand a wide variety of health conditions and prescribe cannabis medication for each unique patient who comes to him for advice. His work in healing has earned him the title, “The Wizard of Woodacre.”

Juliana Birnbaum
Juliana Birnbaum trained as a cultural anthropologist. She has lived and worked in the United States, Europe, Japan, Nepal, Costa Rica, and Brazil. In 2005 she founded Voices in Solidarity, an initiative that partnered with indigenous tribal leaders from the Brazilian Amazon to support a community-led environmental educational center. Her work was featured in her first book, Sustainable [R]evolution: Permaculture in Eco-villages, Urban Farms, and Communities Worldwide (published in 2014 by North Atlantic Books). Juliana was trained to be a Douala and midwife assistant, using a holistic model of care for both mothers and babies.She has written about ecovillages, native rights, and social justice issues in a variety of newspapers, indigenous journals, blogs, and anthologies, including E – The Environmental Magazine, Bridges, The Rising Nepal, World Rain forest Movement Bulletin, and Cultural Survival Quarterly. Juliana is an accomplished writer, editor, teacher, midwife assistant, yoga practitioner, gardener, and mother.
